I'm growing butternut squash for the first time. I've had a few flowers then die back. The plant has several runners should I be restricting the amount of runners so that I hopefully get more flowerheads?? Your advise please.

I'd start feeding them with some flower fertiliser to encourage more of them, I wouldn't restrict growth now, more growth equals more flowers and hopefully more fruit, once they get their male and female flowers in sync :)

Similar problem here, plenty of male flowers but few fruit, going to give them a dose of high potash feed! See if this does the trick!

You might find that any fruit set stays a little on the small side before starting to ripen, as the plant's way of making sure it has some seeds for the next generation.

Been to the lotty today, and guess what? The little darlings are producing fruit, ah bless 'em. Just goes to show that the threat of going on the compost heap works wonders, better than talking to them :D

Would tomato feed help a squash?

Yes I should have said I attended my allotment at the weekend and under the undergrowth I located a full sized squash just turning to flesh colour. I've raised it off the ground and just hope the little critters don't take a nibble out of my prized specimen. I've now got lots of little squashes coming along to.

Have 3 plants and 1 is a different variety to normal, the normal pair just cannot make up their minds if they are going to flower or not - so not holding any hope out for them at this time.
The different one, has so far managed to have male flowers or female flowers but never the two at one time. Have found that I need to hand pollinate the female ones using a file hair artists brush. Have just one developing and there is maybe another. Waiting to see if that one was successful in the pollination or not.
Last year the cropping was reasonable but this year it looks like it is going to be questionable. Still I have at least 1.
