Do any of you take the phases of the moon into account when gardening? Here in France this is so commonplace , everyone seems to do it , all gardening mags have a monthly moon calendar, (I've got one on my fridge). We were a bit sniffy about it at first, but we all need as much help as we can get with this don't we. The moon affects tides and temperaments, so why not plants? For example, the calendars tell you that on, say next Tuesday I can sew lettuce and plant hedge plants, but can't sew tomatoes or cauliflowers, but on Wednesday I can sew carrots and potatoes, but not beans. Sounds complicated but there is a kind of logic. Some days are non-gardening days  - something to do with a lunar knot (!)  -  Whatd 'ya think? Crazy French or not?

Its interesting, but it cant take into account the weather conditions, so its a no-no for me in the cold oop north

I'm not sure whether I should admit that we do use a moon calendar here or not!

This is a subject that has been discussed at great length on here.  Some people swear by it, some people swear at it.

I'm with Zak the rabbit on this one.  Give me science over superstition any day.  Sorry, I know that may cause offence.

Nature often uses or goes by the moon as the tides have a big influence on the spawning of so many sea and estuary creatures, but I would guess the sun has an even bigger influence on gardening, so I will stick with the calender and weather rather than moon phases for my seed sowing etc.

Pretty close. For example, your new moon this month is on 24th, whereas ours is 25th. Bear in mind that we're 12 hours ahead of you (ahead of GMT anyway) which means that our today is your yesterday so, in theory, the moons are the same.... or something like that
