[Weston grower]

Last year I bought a small coldframe and made a table to put it on so that it was about 3 feet off the ground. Into it I put my germinated seedlings to grow on, ready to go into the plot. Missed a frost warning and lost most of them.

So this year I looked at heaters but couldnt find anything small enough - didnt want to cook them just keep the frost at bay. So I've bought a thermostat and connected it to an old outside light fitting which is inside the coldframe. The thermostat is set to frost guard and switches on a 25 watt bulb when the temp drops.

Last night the outside temp dropped to 0c but inside the coldframe it was 5c.

Could you use a fish tank thermostat to ensure an even temperature?
I remember our old Headmaster using one for an incubator at school.
Worked a treat.........sometimes!

One of the places I used to work for allowed me to fit up a large propagating bench in the greenhouse. I used soil warming cables fitted to a thermostat. It gave a gentle heat. In very frosty nights, I used to cover up the plants and seedlings with a layer of horticultural fleece.

My propagator table is 8 foot by 2 foot, how big is yours Gwizz  ? ? ?

Crikey, that's got me thinking. I suppose it must have been 3 feet by 10'ish feet, mind you, it was over 15 years ago now so I couldn't be sure exactly. My workmate and I used to grow all the summer bedding for the marina displays, we didn't grow any veg there. They grassed over all the beds and borders soon after I left.
