How far apart should I plant lettuce plants?
« on: November 09, 2007, 10:33 »
Neighbour gave me some lettuce plants, he insisted I plant them about 18 inches apart and the rows about the same.  The lettuce are coss type (Can´t remember the name but I gave him the seeds) I thought they could go in closer, any views!?

If they are a full-sized cos (e.g. Lobjoits), then he isn't far out.  I'd probably give them 15" each way.

Little Gem can go a lot closer (maybe 8").

You can also plant closer and remove alternate plants as an immature harvest.

Ditto, even though they are diff in size I would personally squeeze them in about half of that distance even if large eventually, and do the premature harvest thing of thinning from early on, it lengthens the season and you avoid having a glut of them ready at the same time.

How far apart should I plant lettuce plants?

I went and checked a couple of different seed sites and they all say approx 12 inches or 30 cm - Its what I've been doing here maybe a little less in high harvest times (we go through about 15-20 lettuces easy a week in summer but only about 5-10 in winter) in summer I go about 9inches/20cm and harvest just the outer leaves when I want lettuce - but this may be easier for me my "allotment" happens to be in my front yard.

hope this helps  :D  :D

Juan isa mostly right but some things (like potato blight) he knows nothing about- would he listen to me alst spring when his spuds were going blacker by the day???? I told him it would spread to his toms (it did) but would he listen? He pulled up his spuds and left the plants in a pile beside the toms.  I even went and bought them black plastic sacks to store the plants in before he burnt them (he didn´t burn them either) Hope the blight stays away this crop.
