When are icerberg lettuce seedlings ready to plant?
« on: March 21, 2010, 15:33 »
My icerberg lettuce seedlings have come through. How tall should I let them get before I plant them?

Thanks.

i would suggest you wait until you have at least 3 true leaves, this is true for any transplant....
its nice to be important, but it more important to be nice......

I sowed some iceberg seeds in my greenhouse border a couple of weeks ago and they are up and running but if they are to go outside I'd probably give them a couple of weeks if you can INH,
Only my personal opinion but who am I to say anything, I've began planting things that shouldn't be in for another month yet but heh it's only my second year of growing so I've got alot to learn yet :) and an excuse ;)

i am in your camp, if we make mistakes so be it....if it comes off hey, we'll have early vegematbles....Just prefer to have a true root structure before tranplanting and that coincides with leaf 3 being visible.

Definately agree Sheridans, you've got to have a good root structure before planting anything out, especially at this uncertain (weather wise) time of year

Thanks everyone. I've just counted and I have two leaves on each seedling, so I guess just a touch longer and they'll be good to go.

I'm intending to grow them in pots (the next batch I'll do in the garden), would they be okay to keep in the house as I have not yet set up my greenhouse?

No you haven't.

Lettuce in my opinion is not a transplant crop and hates root disturbance/hot temps. Otherwise, they will bolt straight away.

Germinate outside in cool temps or, unheated greenhouse border.
Top tip for camping....don't go.
