What should you (or not) grow in a PT?
« on: June 15, 2011, 22:09 »

Is there such a crop that you should (or could) NOT grow in a poly'?  :tongue2:

Or, is it everything and anything can be grown in there?  8)

And why haven't haynes manuals not done a book on something like that yet??

They've done it for chickens!

can't think of one you couldn't grow.
The tunnel protection just brings the season forward 3/4 weeks and extends it quite a lot at the end :)

Gardening Under Plastic by Bernard Salt is quite a good book for new owners of tunnels

as soon as space starts to appear in late summer I fill the space with spring cabbage spinach etc -- gives lots of fresh greens for any day in winter and surplus goes to our ducks.
If you have space i have found carrots are more easily protected in PT than in open garden and can be sown more densely as less need to weed etc. Otherwise virtually anything goes well in PT using teh arlier and later cropping facility except obviously big bulky permanenet crops like rhubarb or asparagus.
One thing not to grow -- a heap of dirty pots and trays etc waiting for sorting and putting away -- just get it done.
Enjoy

A good question.
My PT is short and home made but it works v.well. If you don't have the room like me be careful with tall and short planting as tall and straggly tomatoes will over power lower veg in the same bed.

All looked great when I put the toms and lettuce in the same bed and then filled the gaps with radish.  Then things grew and I have had to hack my way in with a machette.

In future I shall plant toms in the tall eve greenhouse next to house and leave the PT for low growing veg and herbs.

Still a fantastic way of growing.
