Title: mock orange

I love mock orange and havent any in my garden, so I have scrounged some from a neighbour. Whats the best time to go and get some and how? Is it with a heel, or root or some other way? It has finshed flowering so is now a good time? Should i put it in a pot or in the ground?

Mock orange (proper name Philadelphus).  You can take 4 in. cuttings of half ripe lateral shoots in july/aug and put in 50/50 peat/sand a keep in cold frame, then plant out following april/may when rooted.  Or take 12 in. hardwood cuttings Oct/nov and root them in a sheltered place, then plant into position later in year.  When you prune (after flowering) take care to keep young shoots, which wil flower the next year.  Or just bung what you've got into the ground and see what happens.  Good luck, they do smell gorgeous.  Mrs Bouquet

I got a give-away whip of these with something, the first year they flowered and not much scent if at all. :shock:  Any thoughts? :?

not really.  is it in its 1st year, if so it should be much better next.  they are very tolerant and don't need much soil care, but the scent is improved if it is in full sun.  good luck.  Mrs Bouquet

Yes, definitely needs full sun and little other care. Mocks tend to be very heavily scented if given enough sun.

You can also detach a sucker with root attached and grow it from that.
