Hardwood Coldframe
« on: February 25, 2016, 16:20 »
Hi All.
Ive just bought this hardwood cold frame from Suttons http://www.suttons.co.uk/Gardening/Garden+Equipment/Plant+Protection/Hardwood+Cold+Frame_589165.htm

Im quite impressed with it (so far) Its well built and comes nearly complete (you just need to screw the lid on it and slot the shelves in) It also folds up so you can store it over winter.

My question is, should i treat it with anything yet? and if so, what do you guys recommend?

Thanks in advance.

Teak Oil would be traditional and probably help maintain the colour.

Clear Cuprinol is easier to apply. The colour will gradually go to grey as the wood 'oxidises' (like it would naturally but a bit slower) . Some people like the grey, I prefer the natural brown colour.

Treating it now would be best for the wood. It looks like the windows are some kind of plastic so be careful to keep whatever you use of it, in case it reacts.

Thanks for the info!
I have some cuprinol anti uv decking stain left from last year that I was considering using but I might buy some teak oil tomorrow although I might have to wait a bit before treating it as the met office says we have light snow due tomorrow :/
