So whats the plan DD without giving too much away
Grow a sunflower. If its the tallest, it wins. Entries then go into a prettiest competition. :)
-
I think Casper is asking about my plan, going on his pumpkin question!
-
That might be asking for help,.... or something. But of course, I'm sure it isn't. ;) I haven't had a chance to catch up with that question. ::)
-
Casper - it's not much of a secret, especially as I've never won in the past, but I sowed mine 2 days ago, 2 seeds per 3" pot in the unheated greenhouse.
I'll pinch out the weakest from each pot, grow on to about 6" high, then harden off and transplant to their final positions.
-
I can send you some.
The ones marked "dwarf" OK?
-
Thanks sooo much for your kind offer, but I'll buy some to save the stamp :tongue2:
-
You lot do make me laugh, I planted some about two years ago, they were very big, still have some of those seeds left, dont know how I going to plant them this year with a rescued deaf bulldog x breed tearing roung my garden, but will defo have a go. I would plant them at the lottie but wonder if my neighbours would fume if there was a loss of light. I have a great side with a pathway though so may get away with it. Ta

A couple of sunflowers won't block the light. There's plenty grow them on our site and it's nice to see a splash of colour.
-
Yay the lottie it is then. Mine gets the sun all day long and it might chear the miserable allotment officer up when she inspects the plots in May ;)
-
They are, after all, an edible crop!
Hmmm - have I posted this in the wrong forum?
-
No because the birds get them before us ;)
-
besides a lot of farmers around here plant them to encourage beetles and pollinating insects :)
-
All are welcome!
-
No, just 50 will see you in good stead for both!

No because the birds get them before us ;)
in america they grow a drooping head variety just to get by the bird problem and then sell the seeds on to american health food shops, wow another correct fact contributed by my good self  ps only know that cos my american fiancee is a vegetarian.

I'd like to join in too please! Better get my post rate up - less lurking, more posting! :)

let battle comence !!! :D :D :D :tongue2:
-
I potted on my seedlings at the weekend... about 6 inches tall with some nice healthy sets of leaves on them, even tied to them to some 'mini stakes' in the form of wooden skewers... my battle is commencing!
mine are at the top of 6 foot bamboo canes now !! anyone know were i can purchase any longer ones ? oh dear more lies --- lies--- lies :D :D never thought of useing my wooden skewers from kitchen co my plants are about the same size so reccon they will need something so thank,s for that diddy jay 8)
-
If you had to stake them at only 6" high, they're obviously very weak and we've nothing to worry about!

hey this comp is hotting up !!!! ever heard about lulling someone into a false sense of securety dd :D
-
*Gasp*... I didn't 'have' to stake them - I was just trying to give them the best start in life - they are the picture of gorgeousness and healthiness... you will not get me down :D
-
That's OK. By staking them, you've given them support, which means they won't be inclined to put down a good sturdy root system to anchor themselves.

oop,s !! confused now dd  should i stake or not ? ____ i know, i will do half " n " half that way if you are trying to beat me by giving me false advice i still have my backup :D

Don't mind me, I've gone off in a huff, muttering under my breath

i dont think you'll get any lower down than me jay - ive only got sunflower seedlings (from bird seed) - so i still need to buy some seed (idealy tommorow), hopefully the proper seed will catch up - fingers crossed!

OK folks - we've had our little bit of fun on here, but it's getting so that we can't see the wood for the trees and I don't want to miss anyone asking to participate.
Get it out of your system, as tomorrow I intend tidying this thread up and then I will ask purely for posts from those asking to participate or to report on the progress of their plants.
soz dd probebly me and my humour and being new to the site.dont quite grasp all the reg,s yet  i hope we get more people cos it has certainly inspired me to take part
cheer,s jay
-
DD... can 'progress of plants' include any smugness? Are there varying degrees of smugness? Please advise as I can do anything from covert smugness to outright 'I am the winner' smugness. :D I'm thinking covert/under the radar smugness is what's gonna be acceptable...
-
A simple statement of fact like "my sunflowers are still only 6" high" will suffice.
-
Thanks for the clarification DD, it really is most appreciated. So it's perfectly acceptable to say something along the lines of "my sunflowers grew 18 inches overnight and the blooms are four feet across" as long as it's factual? :)
p.s. I hope you don't think I'm winding you up me dear, just like a good banter :D

oooh ouch that must have hurt diddy :D but just show.s he has a sense of humour :D guess we better make the best off it tonight then eh? and still only 6 " high that is just the size of the root balls on mine, see dd i do learn thing,s all be it slowly :tongue2: didn,t know what a root ball was 4wks ago
