I understand tying them to the cane, however when the side shoots start growing im not sure whether to pinch them off after the second leaves or to just pinch off each side shoot entirely :S. can anyone shed some light.

I grow my cukes vertically, but I don't use a cane, I use a Munty frame so that I can tie in all the new vines. Contrary to some thoughts, I get great yields from this method provided I water regularly as there's great demand by the plant for water.
In your case, you could add an extra cane or two for tying up.

I don't pinch mine out unless they are in the way.
Some years I get an awesome crop and others hardly any.
This year is slow to start and so far hardly any -- lots of little ones coming along though, so fingers crosses :D

I just tie mine to a cane usually then add extra canes for upto 2 eside shoots.
I personally find that any more than that and the plants roots cant suply what the plant needs for the crops that begin to form (a bit like a melon plant).

mine grow (or would if they were growing normally this year :() up a cane in the back corner of the greenhouse, and then along some netting fixed to the greenhouse roof struts.
I just let them do their own thing :)

I pinch out at 2 leaves but so far this year only 2 sideshoots have gone past 2 leaves.
i grow on a single string and the added weight of side shoots drags the plant down and the resulting congestion is a haven for botrytis. I do let the main stem explore the GH rafters.

First stab at growing a cucumber this year. I made a cane trellis for it to grow up and then tied it to a string to the greenhouse roof. I had two sideshoots which I trimmed off after 2 leaves only because I was running out of space. I had some problems with grey mould earlier (see previous post) but kept going with it. Only this weekend I had to cut off the top third of the plant because of more grey mould but the bottom two thirds and the two side shoots still have plenty of small cucumbers left to come. I would only trim the sideshoots if you are short of space - you never know if you might have to cut some or all of the plant down to get rid of the grey stuff.

I've grown telegraph indoors which has gone berserk with fruits and La 'something' outdoors. (kings seeds). This is starting to go fruit crazy.
I grew Burpless last year with very poor results.
