I want to grow red kidney beans, what variety do I look for.
-
Had to google but, as I suspected, I think you will struggle in Cheshire. One variety is Red Swan. I've never seen it on sale here.
-
Thank you WG. it was just a thought, both my wife and me love chillies and we want to try and grow vegetables that we like.

You can grow the onions, garlic, chile peppers and caraway (I always add some). Dried white beans work just as well BTW but I too like red beans in a chile con carne.
My Mexican friend hated me putting beans in a chile ... "It is chile con carne not chile con frijole", he says (expletives deleted). We always argued but he is the reason I don't like spelling it as chilli.
-
I make my chili con carne with cubes of braising steak, hot peppers, ground cumin, ground onion seeds, some flakes of dried chilis, one or two tins of tomatoes. Is this the right way?
I always slightly char the meat cubes for more flavour. I agree with your mexican friend btw, WG.

Google around, leisy, as WG says, it doesn't too much matter it just dried beans of your liking really. :)
What more matters, that you can grow it to dried beans on your weather.
-
Thank you, all advice taken readily. It is quite true as you say, it does not really matter about the bean type; the main thing is the vegetables should hopefully always be home grown where possible. We like our chile con carne quite colourful if not strictly traditional and always add sweet corn to it.
-
You can certainly grow the sweetcorn. Follow the WYSIWYGGY link in my sig and look for answers (or post a question).
-
How about these beauties, then?

I'd be wanting to call these Orca beans !

The Organic Gardening Catalogue sells “Canadian Wonder” red kidney beans, £1.56 for 150 seeds.
-
Nice one Paul. No-one tried simply planting them from the grocery store then? (why not, I get asked the same about garlic all the time!)
Not a recommendation BTW
-
Excellent research, 10 out of 10 you are all stars. ****************************************

I know this topic was started last year, but I googled all the major suppliers and still can't find red kindney bean seeds :(
Does anyone have an update on this?

Well I tried that link but it brings up French beans, not kidney beans...are they the same?
-
if you read the blurb it says
Pick when young and tender or leave pods to mature and harvest the red seeds. When these are dry they can be dried and used in salads or chili concarne. 150 seeds.
so I would say they are kidney beans....................
It just depends whether you eat them green(french) or let them ripen fully to eat the beans rather than the pods. :)
-
You can get "Canadian Wonder" red chilli beans from page 9 of the organic catalogue.

Ooooooo thanks a lot, am gonna get some :D

Make sure you specify red chilli beans as I think there is a green bean by the same name.

They are all green if you eat them as green beans, if you leave Canadian Wonder in the pods until they are dried, then they turn red.
-
Thanks zazen, I didn't know that. I haven't grown them but something on my to-doo list. :)
-
Try a handfull of RK Beans from your pantry - it's what we used to do when we ran out of beans that we used to bring back in our suitcases from European holidays 30 years ago.

Like you I love red kidney beans and last year planted Canadian Wonder and have dried them and used them all winter in C. con Carne (and salads and whenever else I can find an 'excuse' to use them). We used Heritage Seeds for our CW originals.

I know this is an old posting but was wondering if anybody up my way ever tried growing these and with what results?http://www.spaldingbulb.co.uk/product/beans-dried-canadian-wonder/
-
If you can grow French beans then you can grow them - cos that's all they are ;)
They're just left to dry on the plant rather than picked green.
-
I've grown them and they're easy peasy, just like any other bean
When they dry on the plant they will attract mice, who love them. So you can either be quick sharp in harvesting them as they drop, or pull up the entire plant and dry it in a shed or cool, dry place with something underneath to catch the beans as they will drop out readily as the plant dries up. They keep their red colour when dry :)
-
cheers mum and queen just need look up the beans that are baked beans think thet haricot
-
Yes they are. You can use borlotti beans like baked beans. I bought a tin in Turkey, once, in tomato sauce :tongue2:
-
or grow any of the white seeded french beans for Haricot beans ;)
