Name the flower please
« on: May 17, 2009, 12:14 »
Hi all

I was just starting to sort one of my borders out, when I came across a beautiful flower. I have no idea what it is though  I am interested to know what this plant is, as I would like to get some more of the same.

Thanks  :D

Yep I'd say peony too, based on flower and leaves.

Hello Clueless,
Welcome to the Forums.
You lucky thing!  It definitely is a peony.
I had some beauties in my last garden, but the neighbours dug them up when I moved in with my Dad to nurse him through his last illness.  When I went back, the Season was over, so I didn't notice until the following year!!

Another vote for the Victorian favourite the Peony, they are normally a long lived plant that like being left alone, the longer they are undisturbed the more they flower.

They can be tricky to propagate, but not impossible apart from you have to disturb them.

peonies are tough plants which often survive in neglected gardens when other plants are overgrown. However this doesn't mean they don't appreciate a mulch of well rotted manure or compost.
They make wondeful cut flowers and can even be dried if picked before fully open.
They can be divided March/April though they might sulk for a time afterwards.

You could always buy some more plants - there are some stunning varieties, look out for 'Bowl of Beauty' or 'Sarah Bernhart'
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

yes agree with all others - a peony - sometimes temperamental when moved, some have a wonderful perfume -  I am lucky enough to have bought 3 with my house - never had them before.  they are subject to falling over in the wind though, so either stake or use a mesh support if needed ;)
'gardening' in Northern France - on allotment style sized plot, fruit, veges, chicken and geese and flowers of course

retired and love the countryside

Thanks very much, everyone  :D

I'm delighted with the flower it produces. You are right about them being known to flop over - I propped mine up against a rose when I noticed the bud. I have a beautiful Camellia flowering nearby, in front of part of the veggie patch, and they complement each other perfectly.
