Oiled the starter clutch and no more kick back........ instant success, thanks.  It was bone dry and sucked the oil into the felt.  I never would have spotted it had I not been told about it.

Managed to sort the bowden cable out and starting / stopping / control is now easy.

I bought a new drive belt and have double checked that it is the right one but it still drives the machine with the clutch disengaged.  I've decorroded the engine pulley and adjusted the clutch as slack as it will go.

The tines are removed at the moment so I'm going to try fitting them and go with a gentle start to see if the extra load from the tines can overcome the friction between belt and pulley.  If not I just hope I don't slip on the throttle control or I could be in bother :shock:
