Late last night we had lots of flashes, but heard not a sound 
It was really weird and I can't remember having seen this before, has anybody else?

We live in a valley off the River Trent and see it like that. Some years ago a silent electric storm swept up the valley setting everyone's burglar alarm off one after another. Absolutely fried ours, ended up getting the ladders out at 3am to unwire it and shut the noise up.

Living on the coast we often get electrical storms over the  Channel without any thunder,  Nothing to be remarked on here.

When I was young, the older folks used to talk about summer lightning with no thunder, calling it "heat lightning". It seems that this is just lightning that you can see from very far away, a greater distance than the sound of thunder can travel.

Probably the same thing also happens in winter.
