I'm no expert (only started growing veg this year on allotment) :?
I tried planting some seeds in a seed tray for the same reason as you about a month ago.
When the seedlings were about 1 1/2" I transplated them,at the same time I popped some seed in the bed around them as a "belt and braces".
The seedlings have been almost overtaken by the seeds that were planted and they also look happier.
Dont forget to thin out, as most beetroot "seed" is a really a container for three or four true seeds and most of these should germinate.
Hope this is of some use Nathan. :D

I normally wait until the first 4 true leaves appear before I transplant them, dont think there is a right or wrong time so long as they are standing too long.
