Soil Moisture Meter?
« on: May 28, 2014, 19:58 »
Hi

I'd like to offer my plants the optimum growing environment I can.

I have set up an automated drip feed thingy for watering but I'm not sure about watering cycles etc.  Do you water every day for 15 mins or every third day for 30 mins etc?

So would a moisture meter help?  I'm thinking along the lines of a probe to stick in the ground and it says 'yes, good moisture for toms' or 'no, this is far too wet/dry for peppers'

Anyone?

TIA

You should have four moisture meters on each hand ! :)
Peppers are best left till really dry to the point of wilting, if you overwater they wilt and die.
Toms do not get too upset if their roots are on the wet side.
Watering toms can be twice a day in hot weather or every other day if it is cool and damp an they are not so thirsty.

I understand trying to get the watering perfect but you  can over complicate gardening.

The commercial growers have state of the art systems and still produce tasteless toms ! ;)

Yeah.  On doing a bit of research it seems sticking a finger in is as good as anything.

Will be reducing the auto watering down to 15 mins every other day as 30 mins seems to be wetting things out too much..(I think).
