In Rye, they used to burn an old fishing boat, and in Lewes, it's a effigy of the Pope! (maybe changed now, but it was some years ago).

Here, there's a version of the Hawkhurst Gang where they get a decent display on The Moor, several chums get involved as it's a charity!

Years ago, I used to be on a float in the Rye one, and it was fabulous fun, with a procession through the town, finishing up on The Salts by the River Rother for the huge display then the fire! The pubs were packed to the rafters! We once did one to slate the government for making farmers pay too much, or get so little subsidy, and someone spelt Calla(g)han wrong on all the sides and flags...

There were several 'private' parties a few years back, with huge displays, and lots of noise including incredibly loud blasts of some sort, which shook the windows. We could never understand why anyone spent so much money on that and not on something really worthwhile, but it takes all sorts!

I agree, Mrs B, just the minimum for home use and let the professionals do the displays for everyone to enjoy!
