My photo of the October page of the calendar is obviously not going to win....
High standard so far.

Snap
Both are fantastic shots :D
sarah :)
-
My photo of the October page of the calendar is obviously not going to win....
That really depends on the calendar & Miss October!
That's two great pictures to start us off but we need more entrants - It's about what sums up autumn for you. Could even be a pile of apples.
-
I've got 2 shots in the bank so far. I'm hoping for that 'magic' moment that epitomises it.
Not just to win but to feel I'm happy. The bar is high so I want to try and kid myself I can leap that high

An Autumn Mix.
Makes a great desktop.
-
Yet another excellent shot. This is really bringing out the talent. If you've never entered a photo comp, this is the one to go for. The theme is all around, so go for it.
I'll put my money where my mouth is soon. :)
Rob 8)
-
Fab pics. Am on holiday next week so will have to find something special if I am going to get anywhere near that book
-
Fabulous Baz :!:
-
wish id waited to see the rivals first
but seeing as i have neither ducks nor geese nor permission to keep any so i dont need or want book ....
i look forward to seeing autumn pics
( autumn is my fave month, when we reap what we sow, apart from spring, which is full of expectation and of course winter, when we can ease up a little, and not forgetting summer, when we can sit and watch it all grow)
good luck all and snap away!!!!! :D
-
You know you'll always think other people's photos are better - but it's what other members think that decides the winner. And its not exactly a lottery rollover prize :)
If the winner doesn't want it, then maybe they can swap it for something they do want.
-
i didnt mean anything negative by my remark  by the way ... got your news letter today and dug up maincrops thanks for the reminder x :D
-
Oh I didn't take it that way!! But when a kind publisher offers a prize, then I'll grab it with both hands. It's fascinating even if you're not intending to keep ducks.
I figure on reading everything because you never know what will come in useful in the future.
I don't mind giving my book as a prize but I can imagine people groaning and saying "Not his blinking book again"
-
i would love to win this and pass it on to babes  as long as she sends me eggs
-
Title: Magical Forest

That's my favourite so far. Just beautiful.
-
mcgovernjon, jimmcgovern15??
Still, excellent photos both of them.
Thanks...Jon is my twin brother! It's caused quite a bit of confusion, got an email from the site admin wanting an explanation...
Anyway, I think everything's sorted now. Thanks for the nice comment about my photo
-
Welcome Jim. Nice photo.
There'll be fighting if one of you wins.
I've never been to the roaches but would like to someday. The peaks is a lovely part of the world. :D
Rob 8)
-
Thank goodness we don't have some sneaky person trying to get two shots at winning the prize! Coz me and my mobile are off to capture the perfect shot
-
Patrick under a pile of leaves ??
-
ooh good idea!
-
I have a cunning plan !!
-
Well I have the duck if you have the leaves
-
We got leaves !! Oh, we got leaves !!!!
-
Cool, you have my address!
-
I don't !!
-
I'm waiting for a tempest of a day to take my photo - have location but no pouring rain.
Just when do need it..
-
Great photos so far. I love the Roaches, it's my favourite crag! Good tea-room as well - they do a cracking staffordshire oatcake with beans, mushrooms and cheese!
-
I don't !!
Well it was on the back of the horseradish in the sender bit of the envelope
(Don't actually send me leaves, I'm sure I can find my own  )
-
Autumn leaves

Somebody looks very happy :)
-
Someone mention spiders?
-
Arghhhh
I'm standing on my chair!!!

-
:shaking:
Can I come out yet ??
I've got lots of ideas but no talent. It limits one's choices.
-
I've got one of the same spider gift wrapping a wasp, but sadly it's not quite in focus.
-
They're fascinating to watch but I don't like the way they string their webs across pathways at head height. It's a nasty trick and someone should make them stop
I did get some webs a few mornings ago. It's in reserve
-
NOT a compy entry, posting for the sake of completeness this is it....
-
Well I love your photo compostqueen! My favourite so far....
oops am I allowed to say that??
Taking loads of photos, but my onions and chickens photo didn't look very inspiring, I am never gonna get that book... :(
-
Ta :D
-
Lovely picture DD 8)
-
Sorry DD - I can't look at spiders without shuddering. That's a phobia for you :(

Well this is my post for this one, My eldest daughter loved walking through the leaves. God hows she's growen!! (My Yongest now wears that coat)
Picture was taken in the fall of 2003
-
That's the real essence of autumn Graham. I can hear the leaves crunching :D
-
mcgovernjon, jimmcgovern15??
Still, excellent photos both of them.
They are twins FCG. Brilliant keen amatuer photographers, who've joined here just to enter the competition. They've got loads of amazing pictures on flickr just google them.
Don't think they grow any veg or keep chooks though, they've not introduced themselves !

Autumn Morning @Bonkers
(http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii117/TotallyBonkers68/978c2279.jpg)
View from our rock, cold start to a lovely day :)
-
Just found these lyrics to a song I sang at school, funnily enough Dan sang it too at the same school although a few years later
It really says autumn to me :)
Autumn Days by Estelle White.
Autumn days, when the grass is jewelled
And the silk in a chestnut shell
Jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled
All these things I love so well
So I mustn't forget
No, I mustn't forget
To say a great big thank you
No, I mustn't forget.
Clouds that look like familiar faces
And winter's moon with frosted rings
Smell of bacon as I fasten up my laces
And the milkman sings.
Whipped-up spray that is rainbow-scattered
And a swallow curving in the sky
Shoes go comfy though they're worn out and they're battered
And the taste of apple pie.
Scent of gardens when the rain's been falling
And a minnow darting down a stream
Picked-up engine that's been stuttering and stalling
And a win for my home team.
Sarah :)
-
I cant see that pic not winning Vember,it is so lovely and really captures Autumn.
I would love to stand there and have a quiet time to think and relax.
You have my vote already :D
-
DD - I've got loads of wasps I can send for your spiders
So I guess that sending John a Christmas pressie of Arachnaphobia or Eight Legged Freaks wouldn't be appreciated?
-

Not really, thanks :)
I was in Pet City one day when I overheard an assistant tell another one that the tarantula had escaped again. Trampling pregnant women and small children underfoot, I made a less than dignified exit from the store, incidentally setting a new unofficial land speed record.

Christine, that's weird. The sky has gone a strange blue colour. Did you photoshop it? :)
Lovely photo, being serious.
-
Nope John that picture is just as it came and is exactly what my Pentax Optio L50 took. Honest we get skies like that up here in Northumberland. :)
It's a brilliant place for taking pictures off my allotment at top of hill looking over Tyne Valley - and if you ask nicely I'll tell you where the pictures from the last year are and you can see that I've caught it that way any number of times. :)
I never photoshop for competitions - that's under my rules of cheating :)

The Chairman of the British Tarantula Society lived in the same town as us when I and brother were in our early teens. When my brother found this out and told mum, she suddenly decided that his previous pleas for a dog were infinitely preferable to the alternative ...
-

I wasn't being serious, although there is nothing in the rules about it. I often correct my photos but I don't enter the competition, obviously.
It's bad enough at the NVS raffle - I keep winning and I donate the prize!!
-
I likes people who asks. I had a professional photographer peer through my on-line file and he found the one that I had photoshopped!!!! Then peered at my tiny camera and said "you got those skies with that?!! - not a bad camera then".
Of course he had the DSLR works plus bells and whistles and I'd not used a camera for 50 years till this summer - it's a long way from a Brownie Box camera to a digital one!!
Couple of years time and I might want some of the other stuff too when I've finished making the silly mistakes with this one (not thumbs but close ups and light).

Beautiful shot - it looks like the sea is rolling in there. I like how you've managed to get those houses that have been picked out by the morning sun in.
-
Stunning picture Sarah what a lovely view you have .

you read my mind, i was already signing this in my head as i was catching up on this thread. this was one of my favourites from primary school.
the other harvest festival one was "i mustn't forget"
"Cauliflower's fluffy and cabbages green,
strawberry's sweeter than any i've seen.
beetroot juicy and onions ripe,
all grow steadily day and night.
the apples are ripe.
the plums are red.
broad beans are sleeping in a blankety bed."
anyone remember than one?
-
my favourite is a 'robert frost' poem
Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
and S E Hinton's interpretation of it in the book/movie 'the outsiders' is wonderful
-
All the entries so far are fantastic. Not sure I can compete with those :-(

Christine, I just bought my wife a Pentax Optio L50 for her birthday and it's a great little camera. I'm finding I now grab her camera rather than taking my SLR!
-
There's a few things that it doesn't do that your SLR will do - for instance Alnwick castle across the Paddock is out of it's range and definitely one where you need the SLR extra lens. But yes there's an awful lot that it will do and it's trained me very well.

Taken in Toombs Meadow, Stony Stratford. Just me and the dog, happy days.
-
Fabulous Ice. Quite taken my breath away 8)
-
I'm the worlds worst photographer usually, but the last rays of the sun on the dog makes this special. Just got lucky I guess.
-
Lovely crisp focus and the water... like a mirror... wonderful :!:
-
Another excellent photo. Can feel the nip in the air.
I'm still waiting for that moment. If it doesn't come, I've still got my reserve.
Come on people. Don't be scared. Whatever Autumn means to you. It doesn't need to be professional.
Rob 8)
-
Oh Ice a beautiful photo!!!
I am now quite depressed never gonna get that book..... :(
I am in tommorrow so will be armed with my camera! :D

Can't write how amazing this shot is, too many big words spring to mind, and I can't spell them
FANTASTIC :D
Sarah :)
-
This is the first time I have looked at this photo for ages, I had to have Ben re-homed last year as I was no longer able to look after him properly. :(
-
Oh Ice, I hadn't realised that. Must have been heartbreaking
-
He was just a puppy and needed lots of long walks. I cried for days after and kept finding things that reminded me of him and start again. I't ok now and I know he went to a good home
(I'm going for the sympathy vote here).
-

Oh Ice I'm so sorry :(
I understand how you feel I still struggle to look at the pictures of Vember (cat) he died last year :(
Sarah :)
-
An absolutely fantastic picture there ICE. Lovely in all its facets, but a shame about the pup. He looks adorable.
-
He was, but unlike Vember's poor cat he is happier now.
-

Hey Ice your pushing all your sympathy votes my way now cheers
Think Vember (the cat) is happier now too :D

I've got this competition sewn up.   Better leave some space for photos now.

Gratuitous photo of Ben. Not another entry.

Us here in 'deep down south' don't seem to have started 'Autumn'yet. Can my photo (when I learn how to do it) go in next month?

Same problem here Whitie. We havent started Autumn yet.Although there is a bit of dew in the mornings and plenty of spiders.
Still growing cucumbers in the greenhouse!
Love the piccies so far on here its gonna be a tough choice on the best.
-
Where's "here" FRUITFULL?
Maybe you could pop it into your profile.
-
Love the piccies so far on here its gonna be a tough choice on the best.
It's not the "best" that's importaint FF. It's the one that means the most about autumn to you that's importaint.
-
For instance, you may decide a photo of a pile of leaves in a Boston(lincs) garden is more meaningful than anything of far superior quality

"Cherry Leaves Turning"
This is Autumn to me as this is the view from my window in the morning
-
SG The top one of the two is a great picture, crisp & clear & texture to the clouds fantastic :)
A great photo of the cherry Ropster, I went out searching for a tree to enter but they just don't seemed to have turned round here yet :?
Either that or the wind has had them
Both shots to me say how wonderful nature really is, you can have the wettest, dullest days and then get colours like that, amazing :D
Sarah :)

i saw the perfect photo on my way out this morning, hoping the scene will look the same tomorrow morning it just depends on one thing......
can i get my backside out of bed and into the cold at 7am on a sunday morning??!!
-
Not as good as all the other photos but it represents Autumn for me.
Title Empty plot
Description Representative of what has been harvested but also the promise of what may be next year.

Looks like good, black fertile soil you have there, Matron.
-
A perfect representation of Autumn, Matron.
And beautifully dug over too :D

I wish mine was as tidy as that! Lovely picture too.

That was this year's potatoe bed - you can't see the rest of the plot
My incentive for digging all the weeds out was harvesting the potatoes.
-
This was at a vineyard in Sussex, where we were taken around the vineyard & then a lovely supper & wine tasting. They were due to start picking the next day.

Title: Bonfire Night
Desc: For me the best part of autumn is my mate's bonfire night. a massive bonfire with the guys burning, fireworks, huge pans full of leak + potato soup and chilli, with thick cut bread and butter.
this is my nephew there last year playing with sparklies.
its cold but cozy .. love it

I love Autumn and it was hard to choose a photo but here is mine. I love seeing webs after a dew with all the droplets of mist clinging on to them even if it does mean wandering in my p.j's lol

it was a beautiful misty morning sarah, not a cloud and the sun coming out and shining through the mist and tree from behind the church.
not a cloud again this morning but no mist either. am so annoyed i didn't have my camera with me that morning.
thank you for your comment on the squash, it's sitting in the garage waiting for me to think up something delicious to do with it.

Is that a competition entry Babe ? Coz it's not quite autumny enough
-
i could hear the stag chasing the does in the woods when i was working in the fields monday but do you think they would come out into the field so we could see?
you could even hear the rustle of the leaves as they were running around.
i thought maybe if i left my camera in the car yesterday it might tempt fate and they might appear but i could hear him calling in the other wood which is further away yesterday.
-
At long last, I've uploaded the photos from the camera. So here goes....
Warm at last.......

A pyromaniac's dream. Recycling wood into heat. :D

That's awfully neat and tidy Rob - :)
-
It was a very brief moment just after a tidy up. Chaos and disorder have once again returned. :D
It's my favourite ritual at this time of year. Havign collected the wood the year before and erected the coal bunker and filled it, I've been itching to light the fire for weeks. Then, at last, the temperature dropped and match was applied to newspaper.
Rob
-
That's awfully neat and tidy Rob - :)
I thought that too! so who had the Grolsch then????
-
No idea
It was from years ago. Wonderful present. It's now used for 20p collecting. :)
Rob 8)
-
We used to put the tops off Grolsch bottles on our shoes, can't remember why???
Sarah :)
-
Wasn't it a boy band thing in the early 80s or something ?
I was far too old and mature at the time.
-
Ahhh yes that's right Bros, although I was more of an A-Ha person
Sarah :)
-
definately Bros, more my little sisters thing..we used to live next door to a pub so grolsch tops were no problem to come by
She still listens to em!
I was a Duranny :-)
Paula
-

Like Aha also. Morten Harket (sp.?). Had some credibility. Good videos.
We digress.

Old(ish) yes. Mature no. You are of the male persuasion. Its been scientifically proven it will never happen :D
(and you wont be famous)

Can't remember much about that period. DD was born in '87 so I was maybe a bit busy. I think it was all rave music as far as i remember.
I didn;t like it much at the time but have relaxed a bit since. :D
-
OOOh '87 I was just starting High School
Them were the days

The Competition closes tomorrow evening
So If you've not put your entry in yet get your camera out !

-
The weather is going to be lovely tomorrow so get out there with your cameras.
The competition will close tomorrow evening !
-
maybe in the costa de Kent but not in Anglesesy Aunty Sally
-
Bear in mind, it doesn't need to be a new photo. You may have something in your collection from years past. Even an old photo you may be able to scan in.
Anything that sums up the concept of Autumn to you. They're forecasting true Wintry weather from tomorrow, so this really is the last chance to get that entry in :D
