Planting out Cauliflower and Sprouts
« on: October 08, 2018, 20:07 »
Hi,

A while ago I ordered some cauliflower and brussels sprouts plants from https://vegetableplantsdirect.co.uk/

I know it’s a silly question but given the time of year should these seedlings be planted straight out or is the intention that they be over wintered in the greenhouse and sown out in spring?

Appreciate your thoughts.

I planted mine out. the soil is still warm and they get a good start. just make sure they have been hardened off or cover with fleece to start.

The cauliflowers can depend on the variety. The Sprouts are a winter veg, so ideally they should have been planted out by the beginning of August to give them time to make good plants for the winter.
Sets a low standard and fails to achieve it.

I agree it seems a bit late to be planting them..
I'd plant them under a fleece cover over small supports/hoops if you can, to give them a protected environment and a chance to catch up, before it gets really cold.

For Brussels sprouts, I would say its too late to be planting them out now.
June is probably the last planting out time.
My sprouts planted out in April/May are now full size and the sprouts forming nicely. Will start picking them in a few weeks time and all through till Jan and Feb.
I think if you plant out now you will get a good Brussels Sprouts leafy head but little or no sprouts.
