The things chickens do.
« on: August 06, 2010, 11:54 »
I'm always interested to learn about the odd little behavioural things chickens do.  I have a broody Barnevelder who has a neat trick of holding a couple of eggs under her wings when you lift her whilst singing Puccini's "O mio babbino caro" which has resulted in a few breakages over the months.  I have to try to remember to check now.  Thought at first it's just an accident but she's done it too many times for this.  I've not known any other hen do it they can only cluck a very bad rendition of the humming chorus from Madam Butterfly.  Got me thinking about all the other little things they learn to do.

Do yours have any clever little tricks which amuse you?

most of my broodies do this HF, and like you I have lost a couple of eggs  :(.
I have advised about this habit on the hen house section before  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

I have a new Goldline hen who squats in front of me and drums both legs on the ground.
I have seen buck rabbits thumping many times but did not know that it was also done by hens. :)

Is it the front legs or the back?

Which reminds me of my sister who when she got married wasn't too domesticated.  The first Sunday roast she cooked for my BIL was roast chicken. When she came to serve it she asked him "Would you like a front leg or a back?"

Mine often have O sole Mio sung to them - although admittedly they have the Elvis version and not the Italian or cornetto version and they like this even though I am tone deaf.
