Why is it that ex-bats always seem to have such long combs? (Is that what you call the pointy things on the tops of their heads? Its what I call them anyway)

just to re-inforce my original statement about my nan... i asked DD to have a look at the photo and i said "who does that look like?"... she immediately said "nanny clarey!!!" hehehe

You are right, calling them combs, and the reason they are so big would just be down to their breeding, although my 2 hybrids have combs of different legnths, however the one with the biggest comb is favoured by the cockerell which is aparantly a symbol of verility

Ex-batts have large combs because they are kept in a warm temperature controlled enviroment and the comb is used to loose heat. The comb does get smaller once a ex-batt has been free ranging for a few months. Also when they have just been released the combs are quite pale. They get redder with time free ranging.

i second that opinion roughlee...

Ours had such big floppy combs they looked very strange, but now they both have normal sized, red combs.
(probably now more so because it's sooo blinking cold!!

I'm really not sure what they are

A bit of a mistake on my part getting them....but saying that they do come from one of the top breeders and I did get them very cheap....they are lovely birds...but don't really have a lot of character

.....plus they can't see very well......might give them s kinhead when the weather warms up!
