I've had a catalogue delivered today selling books and videos of countryside interest. I always like to have a look through these sort of things to see what there is available. One book in particular stood out as being a little different.

Its called 'Your Brick Oven' and this is what the sales pitch said.

"A step by step guide to building an oven, from choosing the site to firing up your first bake. It explains how to cook in the oven, gives valuable tips for brick oven cooks and includes recipes."

Its priced at £10.99 but I have found a cheaper source. I don't know about you, but I think it would be rather posh to have your own brick oven. It could be a nice project for the new year, the book will be up for borrows after I've read it.

I have been coveting Jamie Oliver's but I don't think it would fit on our balcony.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I'm hoping that the book will provide designs for both large and small ovens. :D

They shouldn't work out dear if you can use bricks that you have knocking about. I wonder if they use firebricks for the inside but they're not dear are they.

CQ, you'd have to use proper fire bricks inside as the temps can reach 800F so that you can cool it down to 450F to bake bread which is mostly waht brick ovens are used for.

I'd love one myself but not sure where to put it. With my luck, some pesky chipmunk would try to nest in it when not in use, or wasps would start building nests.
In N.A., indoor brick (wood burning) ovens for making pizza are THE thing to have for 'the well equipped kitchen'. I'm sure they make lovely pizzas but you'd have to make a heck of a lot to justify the price tag

Hi,

Its my first post here and I couldn't resist replying to this one, as I have been planning a wood fired pizza oven for ages!

I have used freecycle to obtain bricks, blocks and other stuff, its been invaluable really. Its all sat in the car port at the moment though waiting for time to get started :)

Anyway, there are several wood fired oven forums which can provide massive amounts of advice. As I don't know if it is appropriate to post a link here or not, you can PM me for a link to the one I am a member of if you like.

Good luck with your project, I must admit to finding it rather addictive so far!
