What to cover with?

We are reclaiming a semi overgrown plot. Half is now cultivated and we are trying to tame the rest! Is it ok to cover a newly dug  and weeded area with cardboard, as I can do this for nothing?
Dangerous with a trowel!

Yes, you can use cardboard - just make sure it's thick enough and weighted down.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
