Title: Pallet fence
Post by: teflon on April 06, 2009, 21:44
This is something i've been meaning to post for over a week(well since i got my own plot).
On my first visit i realised that a fence made from pallets would be a must.I had visions of spending weeks stripping pallets down, sorting the timber, banging posts into the ground &fixing panels to them. That was until my neighbour showed me the easy way.Dig a trench a little wider then the pallet, about 4 inches deep, put a pallet in it&then backfill it with the soil you've taken out.Apparently this is common practice amongst plotholders, but i was gobsmacked at how simple this was.
Anyone got any other little gems like this that they want to share?

I wouldn't bother with a fence. Use the pallets for compost bins!

I like the technique of banging some posts into the ground then sliding the pallets over them - like the way they made the compost bins on Gardeners World the other week... means you can easily replace the pallets when they start to rot...

I would normally say why bother with a fence, however with the sudden rush to acquire an allotment my local one is now full but some of the new people wander through aimlessly wihout always looking where they are stepping so aside from putting tripwire around my plot the need for a fence is sadly required.

It's easier to put the pallet in place then slip the posts in and bang away.
