Didn't spray! Stupid boy
« on: July 13, 2009, 08:32 »
Sprayed my tomatoes on the plot, against blight :)

Forgot to spray the cherry toms in my hanging baskets

Had to throw them away :(

Stupid, stupid boy!!!!!
The answer lies in what you put into the ground!

What did you spray the plot toms with?  I know we have blight on our allotment and I'm anxious to protect my plot if it's not too late.  Last year I lost everything.  Tomato-wise.

I use Dithane and don't have a spot of blight - touch wood on my outdoor toms.

Now I don't know if it's classed as organic or not, but one of the newbies down the site said it wasn't, which is why he didn't use it.

He said this as he was thowing all his blight ridden tomatoes in the skip.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Dithane def not organic, though Bordeaux Mixture is - which I find strange. It's highly toxic to frogs and we have frogs aplenty, Gawd Bless Em. I have used BM on my toms this year though - as I couldn't bear not to have tomatoes ( I hate shop bought toms but really enjoy home grown)  - but I kept it well away from neighbour's ponds.
I lost all my broad beans this year (and I love them) as I was determined not to spray at all. Lesson learned!!
If you can't be an excellent example be a terrible warning...

I was always taught "moderation in all things".

Seems not a bad lesson.

Organic or not, judicious is good.

Yes I'll use whatever I see fit to combat what's to be defeated. But that means I only use it as and when needed. In practice that means very little as I keep a close eye on things.

However, whilst you can see a lot of bugs & squish them or pick them off, you can't see blight spores.

The difference between my plants in the plot & his in ths skip.

What is a Smiths period?  I've read one can register to be notified of it - is it something to do with the Potato Council??

Mine are due for a spray today. Noticed more toms & spuds in the skip this morning.

I sprayed my toms with dithane but they are still starting to get blight.   :( is it worth spraying again? The fruit was beginning to ripen so I've cut most of the trusses off and brought them home to ripen here.
