Hi

I live in Fife, just the far side of the the Forth from Edinburgh.
I picked up a pack of sweetcorn seeds but then I got to wondering (of course, after I'd paid for them) if they'd grow here.

...What's the furthest north that we've had sweetcorn success on the forum?

Thanks

MM

''(of course, after I'd paid for them)''

It didn't cross my mind you may of may have not purchased them in the proper manner.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Mine do OK in Durham, and I'm fairly sure that one of our former members in the far north of scotland grew some, but considering that day length and the shortness of the season the further north you go it could be a bit risky.

I'd try them anyway, start them off inside and plant them out when there's no risk of frost - you'll never know until you try :)

I grow them every year in Glasgow with great success and use the following method:-
Sow indoors in heat, at 20 C, on top of the compost to prevent the seed rotting, in individual cells in late April. Remember that there is no point in sowing the seed too early, or the plants will become too big before you can plant them out into their final growing positions, when danger of frost has passed. Move the plants to a cooler frost free location such as a cold frame.

Plant out in June in a sunny, sheltered position, when all danger of frost is past in your area. In Northern areas, I would recommend continuing to provide cloche protection for the first month or so, to counter the effects of late frosts or cold winds.

I grew some in Cupar last year in a raised bed! It got to about 6' tall but didn't ripen enough to eat it sadly. Mind you, I think that was probably a result of the rubbish summer as opposed to the geographical area!  :)

Ah... somebody a few miles further north than me!  I'm in Inverkeithing.
I'll try RF's approach and with a little luck...
It's all for fun anyway.

Thanks folks!

I had great success in Glasgow last year.

I started mine off in the greenhouse  and grew them on till they were about a foot - foot and a half, purely because I was behind in preparing the ground.

Everyone commented on how great they looked when I put them out, being a novice I wasn't sure what they should look like but the final product was soooo tasty  :D

What if the Hokey Cokey IS what its all about...
