One of mine SHOUTS really loud a me if i ignore her. The first time it happened I ran over to see what was the matter and there she was stood there all smug. Another one is constantly mumbling to herself even when she's eating. Her eyesight is going so it's just her way of keeping in contact with the others. But Poppy crowes like a cockerel, bless her. The chap nextdoor isn't too keen on her.

Hi

What breeds are they and do they free-range?

When do they make the most noise eg. before or after the lay maybe?
1 Hubby, 2 children, 2 Welsummers, 1 Leghorn Banty, 1 Wyandotte Banty, 1 Barnevelder, 2 Isa Brown, 1 Rhode Island, 1 Goldline,1 Maran, 2 Mottled Leghorns, 1 Leghorn cockerel & 2 Jack Russells

I had three noisy hens til we moved house and lo and behold they became as quite as mice.  I think it was all the noise from neighbouring cockerels and turkeys, plus noisy neighbours and their children. I think they just respond to that stimulus  :)

Ours get set off by the neighbours dogs!

When we first got them I was worried they were too noisy but now they only sqauwk when they have just laid an egg and when those darn dogs start barking! Otherwise they're pretty quiet.
The glass is neither half empty or half full - it is simply the incorrect size! Find a new glass!

Depends on breed

If they are white sussex you may be out of luck!

I have never had an issue, but my two white sussex squark all day long!  My friend had the same issue!

I hate signatures but love irony

My white sussex is my quietest.  Mine make loads of noise when I go out to them and when they lay an egg.  I have neighbours close to them but no one has ever complained - yet.   ::)

Our Welsummer was noisy for a girl we thought aspecially after laying she let the whole darn neighbourhood know what she's been up to! Also when we had the neighbourhood cats taking too much interest in them they seemed to all make warning noises to the troops (only 3 in the troop lol!) once we got another dog and the cats stayed away we had peace restored. Our current 2 Orpington and Bluebell are very quiet indeed.

I have a spangled Hamburg who shouts for between 30 and 60 minutes prior to laying!  I thought she was being attacked the first time I heard her. there's nowt so queer as chooks!!
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Are quails noisey to keep? Also can you put them in the same run as chickens?
