Whilst we were away we stayed in a cottage on a farm in Cornwall. They kept a variety of chickens in large runs.
I was very surprised how timid these birds were. I was expecting them to come to the wire, like mine do, to have a look at who is looking at them, or to see what they could scrounge, but no they shied away. ::)
So we guessed that they would not have names, grapes or Hentastic treats :(

I think most farmers would roll their eyes and mutter rude remarks about daft townies, if they knew how we spoiled our back garden chickens Dan :lol:
The chickens had large runs and were no doubt well cared for. That's an awful lot more than most commercially raised chickens get :)

Once, when we raised chickens, there were 300 running around. A little girl came with her parents to buy a few POL's and asked me if they all had names.
Yes, I told her, that's No.1, that one is No.2 :lol: ;) ;)
When you have a lot of chickens, especially if they are hybrids and all look the same, or almost, its no good trying to give them names! ;) ;)

To be honest it is better to not get too attatched to poutry, you lose them sooner than most people realise . :(

A friend of a friend used to do that too, even when she was counting the £'s as they went into the livestock trailers to go to the abattoir! "bye Daisy, bye Ruby, bye......." :nowink: :nowink:

Our's are always there for handouts and a couple of ex-batts tend to go for feet, but we are hands off so unless there is something going they will move out of the way. We have four different lots of ex-batts and they are all slightly different, but names? No, not any more, the turnover is quite high but they have a lovely life while here. The backyard hens are different, they are totally different characters and colours so do tend to get a name if one happens and generally they are healthier and live longer.
