Poorly whisper kitty
« on: May 17, 2012, 19:05 »
My little cat, Whisper, seems to have become poorly.  :(  If you are squeamish please stop reading here!

She has been licking around her bottom area for a couple of days.  My first thought was worms but she has been recently wormed.

We wondered if it was as simple as she had sat in something that was irritating her or smelled nice so we (surprisingly successfully) gave her a bath, but she has continued to lick the area.

I just witnessed her using her litter tray the bathroom floor.  I don't usually watch this sort of thing   but first a dark yellowy liquid came out followed by a bit of diarrhoeah.

I don't want to rush her to the vet unnecessarily but she was born with the caliche virus (and had most her teeth removed at a year old) so I am very protective.

I have work tomorrow and the vet is shut at the weekend so I need to decide whether to take time off work and get an emergency appointment or hope she's ok til Monday.

If you've got this far well done and thank you.  Any ideas?

Edit: Forgot to say she is around 8 years old

The glass is neither half empty or half full - it is simply the incorrect size! Find a new glass!

Sorry to hear that Whisper is poorly.

If she has diarrhoea, then she needs plenty of liquids (not milk) and to be kept warm.

Her continued licking is a symptomatic of a cat with diarrhoea, and may well leave her back leg fur very wet.

If it were me I would take her to the vet in the morning, and if possible ring for out of hours advice this evening.

If she has caliche (calicivirus?) then her system already has a lot to deal with and she may well need treatment to get well, rather than just waiting to see how she gets on

Thank you.  You have reassured me that I am not over reacting.

She allergic to dairy products so I only give her water anyway, and fortunately she doesn't like outside so will stay in, but I have had the heating on all day for her.

And yes it is the calicivirus - I meant to check the spelling before I posted and forgot!

Let me know what the vet says -- might be just a long lasting antibac injection. Let's hope so

Definitely not overreacting

You're definitely not over reacting as sunshineband says. It would good be get to get some advice tonight if possible. They may suggest you only let her have water overnight to see if things improve. It may just be a little bug or something she ate but diarrhoea can become serious quickly so I would get her checked out. I assume there are no other changes you have noticed? Eg mood.  I hope poor Whisper feels better soon.

I shall be taking her to the vet in the morning.

She is a very quiet cat anyway so its not unusual for her to be withdrawn so is difficult to notice behavioural changes.  She has been rather cuddly for the past few days tho.

When Miki was ill (severe sicknes with blood and diarrhoea) The vet said to give the energy drink, the water based one, that sports folk use...called  something like Aquarius (here in Spain) I am sure it is for sale in the UK or similar.
Hope Whisper is better soon

Unfortunately I couldn't get this morning off work to take her to the vet.  However I only worked til lunchtime and when I got home she seemed absolutely fine.  Have been keeping her warm with plenty of water around for her to drink.

Am still going to keep an eye on her and would really have liked to get her to the vet but as she seemed so much better when I got home they wouldn't have classed it as an emergency.

10 minutes ago she was stealing food off our rottweiler!!

For lizards, they reccomend "powerade" the blue colour one on a forum I use.

Another trick, add a spoonful of water to her wet food to increase liquid intake.

Hope she's ok.  :)

Glad to hear she is feeling better. Definitely keep an eye and stick to some of the blander foods like chicken and fish if she normally eats them, to avoid upsetting her tummy

So, 7 o clock this morning "meow meow" on my pillow before taking me downstairs to pinch the dogs food!

She's absolutely fine today, just had a crash as she knocked everything off my chest of drawers in my bedroom to sit in the sunshine!  :D

Sounds like she is over whatever it was  :)  Maybe it was just a bug and hit her a bit harder as she has a pre-existing condition  :)
