Oh no! Football damage!
« on: April 21, 2012, 13:39 »
It's a full-time job maintaning this garden what with pests of all kinds including the son who has accidentally broken several branches off my dwarf azaelea.
I only planted it a couple of years ago and it was doing so well!
It will survive....there are a couple of branches left but I wondered if there was any way I could use the 2 snapped branches to propagate more? There are new shoots on them and when I put them in water they perked up.
Any ideas anyone, please, pretty please.....?

You have nothing to lose, pop them in a pot in a corner of the greenhouse and cover with a plastic bag making sure the bag does not touch the leaves, they should take after a few weeks.

Do I plant the old wood whole branch (about 8") and how deep/ what prep or should I cut off some of the (rather small) shoots?
I remember seeing someone somewhere (Monty?) doing softwood cuttings and making sure there was a "heel" of the old wood?
Probably completely the wrong time of year for this too!

Usually it is best to take soft cuttings of these azaleas in the summer, mainly because the shoots can be a bit short earlier.

Peel off a soft shoot, with a heel of old wood and pot them in ericaceous compost about an inch deep.

If they are very long, reduce the length to about two inches above the ground as this reduces water loss.

Keep them damp and shaded, and some where reasonably warm (as it not summer time), and you might be lucky
