Carrot fly?
« on: October 21, 2007, 11:30 »
I was blighted with carrot fly this year.  Can I grow carrots on the same patch next year or the year after, dose the grub stay in the soil?  Is there anything that works to kill carrot fly(grubs) at all?

Even if you move the carrot crops they will just fly to the new area.  Best to protect with fleece/netting or grow them in containers, ie old bins, baths etc so the carrots are about 3ft off the ground.

carrot fly likes to live in or near ground elder and related plants - normally in hedges - so protect your crops with fleece, fine mesh (i use old curtains) - especially if you have hedgerows nearby

I used an old water tank and the results have been superb, as the carrot fly cannot fly very high so couldn't get to them :D 1 - nil to me :D

I grew my carrots this year in an old bath, and in the veg patch surrounded by fleece up to 2ft ish.  The ones in the ground actually did better than the bath!
