first attempt at Strawberries
« on: November 17, 2011, 16:23 »
Hi all. Does anyone have any advice on which strawberry plants to grow? I have created an area on my plot for approximately 10 plants but the choice seems baffling! I want something that I can pick and eat but also that I can also make jam out of. Should I go for one variety or get different ones? Thanks in advance for your always helpful advice

They can all be eaten or jammed, so the choice is yours  ;)

Here's a thread with a few recommendations, which may help...

Without doubt, Mara de Bois was fab this year.  Although it doesn't fruit until about end July, it carries on right to the end of October.  The flavour and size was excellent.  I grew mine in pots and have only recently trimmed them back and put them into the cold greenhouse.  Still they have grown a bit and are flowering!...

10 plants wont be enough for jam and eating.... but its a start. 50 is more like the mark.

I grew irrisistible last year and had about 25-30. A few died - I think I planted the crowns too deep. The taste was really good but they only gave me around 5-6 strawbs a day which was just a tease! I have heard that the 2nd and third years are more productive than the first. I have bought some more and like you am hoping for to get enough for jam and eating this year.

It's getting a little late in the year now.  If I recall correctly I got mine early autumn last year but you may find them from spring onwards.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I like to buy a few potted plants in early summer from garden centres or similar outlets and propagate runners from these. The following year the parent plants and runners will all bear fruit.

Many plants from a few £s spent.  :)
