My hens love yoghurt!
« on: April 12, 2011, 18:12 »
Now and again my hens get some yoghurt which they love. I was told it's good for their crops, but it's also good entertainment watching them eat it and flick it everywhere!

Yogurt is bad for chickens... it contains lactose, and chickens don't have the lactase enzymes to break it down i.e. they are lactose intolerant, so they may suffer from upset tummies and squitty bottoms if they get yogurt more than very occasionally :(

They only get it occasionally. I heard that the 'probiotic' is good for their crops. Yoghurt is also a good source of calcium.
As for upset tummys, that has never happened either.

you can buy a probiotic called avipro plus which is for birds. This does not contain lactose and can be mixed into their water.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Many people I know who have chickens feed theirs yoghurt now and again for the probiotic and the calcium addition. I guess everyone has a different opinion and there are many opinions that are correct.

I love that video!  You were very bave to get the camera that close while they were flinging the yoghurt around.  When mine gave eaten squishy food you need to stand well back or they wipe their mucky faces on your legs.  :tongue2:

My hens love yogurt too, but I only give them BIO yogurt when I think they need some "Good Bacteria".

You can almost hear them saying, "Yum, yum, yum!"
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!
