When do you think is the latest I can put my wallflowers, honesty and sweet williams in their final planting positions? The bed I want them in still has lots of summer annuals and it seems shame to yank them out when they're still flowering so well. Thanks as always, Jude.

Before the ground cools down too much and there is too much danger of frosts.

It's difficult, isn't it.  My annuals are at their best now.  I feel cruel when I have to pull them out. 

Last year, I planted some of the wallflowers in the vegetable plot and dug them up with lots of soil round the roots and replanted them in early spring.  They flowered surprisingly well.   

Then, of course, you have the problem of pulling out the wallflowers while they are still flowering to plant summer bedding

My garden centre sells bare rooted ones which are glorious every year. They arent getting them in until the second or third week of october so I wouldnt worry till then. I also have the same problem with Cosmos and Snapdragons and Dahlias in a wall that with constant deadheading look as good now as they have all summer. After they finish I always put wallflowers in with the bulbs that are already there.
