Broad bean Recipe help
« on: August 03, 2010, 22:23 »
My neighbour has kindly given me some broad because if i like them i will grow some next yr.

Im after a simple recipe to try them out to see if i like them.

Any ideas for a broad bean novice?

Cheers  :D

broad beans go marvellously well with bacon and fried cook potato chunks with HP sauce and some beetroot on the side

Baby broad beans are lovely but if the beans are a bit bigger it's recommended to shell them after cooking, the thin transparent shell covering the bean, as they taste a bit funny to some folks and it's that what puts folks off them.

Jamie makes fritters out of them  :)

Bacon already mentioned, but broad bean and bason risotto fnished with Parmesan, very yum or just broad bean risotto with plenty Parmesan. :)

I recently made a warm salad with broad beans and black pudding as the two main ingredients (very loosely based by me on a Spanish tapas dish), also incorporating among other things, some delicious first early potatoes and some of our chillis.

I have podded, then blanched and peeled all my broad beans before eating or using in recipes.

HTH.

My fave comfort food, well one of many is to cook some beans for a while in a pan, skin them and then toss into a frying pan with a little olly oil and some chorizo chunks served on toast which has been wiped in the pan to soak the oil.
The family fave is broad bean and ham soup, make same as pea n ham but with BB's.

If you either blanche the beans in boiling water for a min and then cool, or freeze them and let them thaw out the shells come off much easier.

I never like BB when I was young, so don't grow them.
Maybe I should try some and remove the shells....if you think that is what I didn't like?

I do think that Mum. Its the first year we've ever grown them as I always said I didn't like them. They're pretty tasty all peeled and a fantastic colour on the plate. :)

That was the prob when I was a kid, my mum just boiled em up and dished em out, YUK! Now I love em if they are podded and SHELLED too. They are mighty expensive in the shops so not many people buy em, if they were not as expensive I bet there would be more recipes on tv and they would show folks how to shell them so they would enjoy them.
I love em with parsley sauce.
