sweetcorn as a windbreak
« on: July 19, 2010, 20:19 »
My plot is quite windprone...I was wondering if I could use sweetcorn as a windbreak, I know you should grow it in blocks but would growing it in a row 3 or 4 deep work ok

My sweet corn is in blocks 15x6 but the recent winds have made some of them near the edges a bit wobbly.

Possibly, but growing them in rows could be a waste of a crop as very few of them would be pollinated because you would be planting them to reduce the wind into your plot and they'd only really be of a useable height just at the end of their cropping season.

Perhaps grow some non invasive bamboo or plant a hedge (if you are allowed).  NOt only would it be more permanant it could provide a home for wildlife, but either of those options would require regular maintanance to prevent it becoming an eyesore and if they became too large they could shade out your nearby crops.

As my sweetcorn proved last week, it is not very wind resistant......I had to rescue it from being blown over

I think even grown in blocks sweetcorn need a windbreak rather than providing one for other plants if the site is particularly windy.

(Mine have survived the recent gales well having been surrounded by canes and string with a few further strings threaded through the middle of the block.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
