sudden lame duck
« on: July 06, 2010, 21:48 »
Hi all,
I know ive not been on for ages, so feel a bit bad jumping in with a Question. Sorry. :(, but hope someone can help

We found Pretzl duck about an hour ago collapsed in the garden.
Her legs seem to have seized up kind of straight out behind her, and she is very floppy.
She has been running about all afternoon fine as anything.
there are no signs of any injury.
Have got her lying in a box in the lounge now trying to get her to have a bit of water.

Has anyone any idea what may be wrong?
Im worried sick and jacob is in tears.

Thanks guys.

Hi, I'm really sorry she is so poorly and I'm afraid I don't really have an answer. Although I have never had a problem like this I did wonder if it sounded a bit like bolulism with the floppiness and seized up legs. Really the only thing you can do is supportive care and make sure she is getting water.

The other causes of lameness in the "bible" are bony or muscle injuries but then she should be well in herself or dietary deficiencies where the onset would be slower but in all honesty I don't know.

Any illness could make her floppy and off her legs. Have you carefully checked her, through her feathers for any injuries she might have hidden?
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Oh thankyou so much for replying.

Shes had a good beaker full of water and a drop of rescue remedy.

Shes an utter mystery.....only a few hours ago she was chasing after the hosepipe  and absolutely fine.

I have given her a good check over and nothing has become apparent.

She's drinking on her own from a bowl as i type,  just still seems paralysed from her neck down?

Looks like Im sharing my bed with a duck tonight!!.

Thanks again.

I hope she is getting better. I just wondered if she may have had a stroke - I don't know if she would be affected like that? :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Hi all.

Well Pretzl is still a mystery.
She is managing to stand for short periods now but still cannot walk, but has developed a sort of bottom shuffle to get around!
She does not appear to be in any pain, eyes bright etc.
Have given her another good check to see if anything has become apparent while I have been at work but nothing. If anything she's enjoying the fuss!
Eating and drinking fine, and she laid a perfectly normal egg on my lap this morning.

I phoned my vet, but the vet who deals with 'exotic' pets....(yes I know  :blink) is not in till tomorrow so its pointless taking her.

Im just going to carry on with the tlc and keep a good eye on her.

Thanks for your replies, I was really worried last night.
