does wooden staging need preservative
« on: March 04, 2010, 18:39 »
I just bought and put together a wooden and polycarb seed house. It's a bit like a coldframe but 5' tall with three shelves at different heights. The shelves are made from quite sturdy wood, but I was wondering if they need wood preservative applying.

I have just finished putting a coat of preservative on the seed house itself, and i have enough for the three shelves too but not sure whether to. The preservative I am using is one that is supposed to be harmless to plants when dry.

 :)

I'd do them to be on the safe side, as it can get quite humid inside there :)

A few years ago Mr Sunny made me a lovley wooden potting bench for the greenhouse  :)

Last year he made me a new one, and this time he put wood preservative on it becasue the first one had started to rot and there were crumbly bits in the top

I would give the glazing bars another coat before you fit the polycarb if you have enough stain. The shelves can be given a coat anytime.

Thank you for the advice. I will put preservative on the shelving, I hadn't thought about humidity I supposed that the seed house wouldn't be as air tight as a greenhouse, but it makes sense to treat the whole thing.

8doubles the seed house was flat packed and the instructions stated that I should assemble it before treating ( I did wonder about the wisdom of this, but it's too late now). But I will put a second coat of preservative on the outside.

Now i just have to decide how soon I can put my seedlings in there and get a min/max thermometer to tell me when i can safely put my chitting spuds in too.  :)
