Fox Trap.
« on: April 30, 2009, 22:44 »
Hi, could anybody point me in the way of a good homemade design for a fox trap.
Our allotments have a fox problem, and we are losing too many chickens.
Thanks.
John.

I know your looking for a fox trap. But once you have got rid of the present fox, another will fill its place sooner or later.
May I suggest that you look at the security of your hens.
What is the run surrounded buy?
How many chickens have you lost.
Stuart

sorry planters, but roughlee's right - you have to fox-proof your run.

dig chickens wire under the ground by 18" if you can and make it stick out the side so the fox gets bored digging.
have a mesh roof on the run, too, if it's not covered.  foxes can jump in from 6feet if they're hungry.
also, don't use chicken wire as the mesh around the run - it does not keep out foxes, all it does is keep chickens in! use 19gauge weld mesh.  i recommend 1cm sq holes.
put this wire on the outside of the frame so the fox can't push it in.

at this time of year foxes are looking for food for their babies so they will go for anything that's an easy target. and anything that isn't.....

check out the fox-proofing thread in the stickies

dig chickens wire under the ground

DO NOT USE CHICKEN WIRE.

Foxes can chew through it. You will need at least 19g weld mesh try 1" by 1/2" as this stops rodents as well as foxes.

I did say that!!
(but i put smaller size holes)
the reason you don't use chicken wire is not only because foxes can chew through it (but they can chew through anything that they can get their teeth round, so bigger-holed weldmesh would be equally stupid), but also because (and this is the yucky bit) the chickens stick their heads through the holes trying to excape and the fox bites it off

ps: i only mentioned the chicken wire for under the ground, but! you'd have to use double or triple thickness to make it work.

Follow this link for plans to make a rabbit trap. If you make this bigger than specified it will be suitable for foxes too.

Have you considered how you are going to kill the foxes if you catch them?
As with all vermin, it is illegal to release them elsewhere.
