Galvanized steel rods
« on: April 11, 2009, 07:46 »
I saw an episode of Gardeners World a while back now where Monty Don made some plants supports out of galvanized steel rods by bending them around a tree so was wondering if anyone else saw this and where would be a good place to get some rods?

I'd try a good local farmer or builders merchants.  They have similar stuff at various grades.  You do have to have about 20m at a time though!

You can buy steel rods at Homebase, but they are only a metre long.

We have several firms round us who make railiings and fire escapes ( look under Steel Fabricators in directories ) They sell steel rods very much cheaper than any DIY store although most of their stuff is not galvanised.
I had some similar home-made ones years ago in a garden I managed - very effective as plant supports and hardly noticeable.
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

I have about 36 steel reinforcing rods 8ft long, my father bought them at the end of the war so they are over 60 years old. They were originally the stakes for coiled barbed wire at the airfield perimeter. A very good investment. Used for Runner Beans.
