Yoghurt Maker
« on: January 11, 2009, 08:15 »
Had a retro moment recently and bought a yoghurt maker (all the rage in the 70's). Looked at the instructions and realised why they went out of fashion.
I have to go to the shops to buy some live yoghurt in order to get it working, and keep a supply of live yoghurt somehow for when I need it.
Thought - While I'm at the shops I can buy a large carton of yoghurt and save time and energy.
Would like to give it a go though, has anybody any experience of them?
How can I keep some live yoghurt for when I need it?
Any tips on using the maker, or is it destined for the charity shop?
I started out with nothing.....and I've still got most of it.

Yep, I had one about 100 years ago and used it a lot. Mine was the sort where you divided the mixture between 6 glass pot with plastic lids and then put in a heated "stand". I used to just keep one pot in the fidge and use it to start the next batch.

I had one like Poolfield's, but gave it to my daughter who never used it, when I asked her if I could have it back if she didn't want it, she said I think its in the attic, but if its up there, I'll NEVER see it again!!! lol

Mine is just one large pot, about 1 litre.
Thought about keeping some in the fridge for next time, but was unsure how long it would last (don't envisage making loads of the stuff), as the pot I bought from shop says use within 3 days once opened.
I was also wondering if you could freeze some of the yoghurt, mumofthree, but thought that this would kill the "live" yoghurt. Better have a go, can just be trial and error, like a lot of my cookery.
Will report back.

Must confess to having one. Bought at a Car Boot Sale many centuries ago. It, at present, resides with the Ice Cream Maker (again bought at a Car Boot) in the loft. Lack of space!

You did say your kitchen was full but making icecream in the loft      I think maybe you have a worse gadget habit than me. At least they were carboot purchases and they don't count do they, it's kind of recycling
