Place them in a bowl to soak up water and treat them as non hardened off plants at first ;)

As a newie I am not sure what you mean by treat them as non hardened off plants at first, please can you explain...Thanks

I bought two red gooseberries, (there wasn't any green ones,) and two thornless blackberries. I'm thinking of potting them up one size and letting them get a better root system before I harden them off.

It means gradually get the plant used to outside conditions, as it's been in a closed environment for the last week or so - don't suddenly put it outside day and night.

Gradually harden it off before planting it out - explained here
