Experiment
« on: April 21, 2013, 20:46 »
Ey up, now that's yorkshire lol.
Right ladys and gent. I am very much a newbie/young pup but I've an idea. With this changing climate do we not need to change how we grow stuff? I did a horti course and although it was pretty much basic it made me think. There can never be a "too early time to sow". My toms are 13" tall, sown on 4/4/13. As soon as they started looking leggy I took off 1st leaves and buried the stems and from the leave they rooted and now are looking strong.

Due to our special climate could sowing early and lots of TLC work??
Just wondering

Seriously, they've grown 13" in just 17 days? :)

These are some late January sown toms. If yours have grown 13 inches in 17 days, you must know something no one else does!  ;)

Don't treat the sowing times on seed packets as gospel. They are an average time in an average year. It's very easy to extend the growing season at both ends and people have been doing it since long before climate change came on the scene. TLC and a bit of ingenuity are all that's required.

Tha can allus tell a Yorkshireman, but tha can`t tell im much.

I did the same with my toms, sowed early march ( heated prop) and potted them on deep into the unheated greenhouse. All doing well and thickened up nicely

Whoops I meant to put centimetres not inches. They are on my windowsill get sun all day and are kept warm so that is probably why they are growing quick.

;) we believe you scott, not many would

TLC tends to be expensive: extra lighting and heating all adds up and weigh it against how much extra you would be prepared to pay for an earlier crop.

TLC is expensive? I spose grow lights and that kind of set up would be.

A January sowing and a window cill indoors works here (the central heating is for me, not them) - it's a pain at this time of year taking them out to the greenhouse every morning and then back again at night, but the effort pays off I think :)
I only sow a few early ones the rest get sown late Match
