Brassicas
« on: April 18, 2013, 17:55 »
I had some early brassica selection small plants delivered from marshalls on Tuesday, these I have potted into three inch pots, for two reasons, firstly my area on my rotation is not quite ready, another week me thinks, also club root was evident last season so I wanted them to go out with more root growth, have I done right. How long should I or could I leave them in pots in the garden? Many thanks

You've done exactly the right thing.

Mine go out at about 6" high, by which time the roots should have nicely filled the pots.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Don't moddly-coddle them! Brassicas will stand any nighttime temperatures we're likely to get now.

Where are they now?

I'm in the process of getting mine outof the unheated greenhouse. Brassicas do not like warmth.

I was thinking of taking mine out of the greenhouse cloche for the same reason, although as we are fast approaching summer they are going to have to deal with some warmth whether they like it or not.

Quite right, but not as much as they get in a greenhouse!

Mine are sitting happily in the cold frame with the glass removed and replaced with debris netting.

I assume I will need to introduce them to outside for a week or two before planting out.  Anything I need to do with the ground before them meet their new home??

Make sure it's quite firm.

I've got a heavy roller which I run over mine. (Don't do it if the ground's wet).

Chuck a handful of lime into each planting hole. (Never lime and fertilise at the same time).
