Cold frame window from bathroom
« on: February 04, 2013, 18:39 »
I've picked up a upvc double glazed window 1050 x 600 that was about to be put on a skip, however it came from a bathroom so has patterned glass on the inside pane, I'm thinking that it won't be a problem as it still lets the light in, I will just have to lift the lid to see what's actually happening under the glass.

Am I right or should I not use it (which seems a real shame)

I would have thought you'd get the same amount of light through, it's just bounced about a bit so you can't see through the glass.

Plants seem to grow quite happily on my bathroom windowledge  :)

That's kind of what I was thinking Mum a bit defused, but the light is still going to get in there

Now Toying with the idea, do I build cold frames or harvest enough windows to make a bispoke greenhouse type structure by making a timber frame and fitting in the windows.

I now have 4 windows, 3 smaller ones and this larger one). Ummmmmm decisions decisions  ;)

Cold frames are really handy ( I have 2 home made tatty ones). But greenhouses are good in that you can stand in them and do sowing etc. (I have one tatty one). I also have a shed, and it is full to bursting so you can never have too many ropey structures for really serious veg growing...
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Personally I would stick with cold frames.  A greenhouse, especially if you decide to roof it with old dg units would be very heavy.

I had 3 coldframes Brian made for me from old glazing units, and I have a large dg unit that I lay over the top of 2 of those recycling boxes the council give out.  That was good to help my early carrots and spring onions along.

This is one of the cold frames (can't remember now if it was double or single glazed, but still did a good job!

Shame you are not a bit nearer to us, I have 4 units of differenet sizes out the front at the moment where Brian has just changed all out dg units.  The rest went to the tip last week!

The frame should be compact in size and easy to assemble.

I have a piece of toughened obscure glass that I found on my plot when I took it on. It's great and I use it all the time, and can move it about as it has no sharp edges. The obscurity doesn't seem to bother the plants. I think they must appreciate the diffuse light  :)

I use it most often as a lid for my four-windows-screwed-together cold frame

This is what I've done with the normal 3 and the larger bathroom one will form a smaller version
