Title: Roadside Apples
Post by: matty_s on August 27, 2009, 14:29
Following a small scale but very succesfull batch of homebrew cider last year my friend and I are giving it another go this year. On our hunt for more apple trees to increse our juice output we have found 2 large, apple laden trees next to a busy section of motorway.

I was just wondering if these apples would be alright to use after a good wash and scrub or would they be contaminated from the high quantity of vehicle exhaust fumes?

Any help/ideas/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I'd risk it personally. I think it was mainly lead contamination which shouldn't be an issue now. After a good scrub I would have thought the juice would be ok.

Maybe try pressing a few and see if you can detect any odd tastes ?
