I do love them both... it is always the postage that makes my eyes water though, with tubers etc (not just Sarah Raven's either)

What a question, it’s like asking me do I need more shoes lol. Go for it, I might needs lots more as I’ve left mine in the garden again but this time we’ve had heavy frosts & lots of snow ☹️. My own fault I know. But hey, maybe next year I’ll be more organised. Let us know what you order😉😉

My catalogue hit the mat yesterday as well, but I haven't dared to look yet

Do you need more - probably and with an uncontrollable urge once you have flicked through those lovely pages of colour

I`d love lillies but unfortunately the red Lilly beetle loves them more in my garden. I only have to turn my back and they are devastated by the little devils.

My Sarah Raven catalogue arrived today, and I feel it would be disrespectful not to squeeze a few more dahlias into my patch as they've taken so much trouble with the lovely photos.
I'll probably need a shoe horn to get them in, but you can borrow it if you need to MoS.

I finally emptied my dahlia pot from last year today.  My 3 Sarah Raven tubers were pretty decent sized to start with, but had grown to fill the pot and had to be carefully chipped out.  I'm hoping for even more flowers this year  8)

Absolutely Jaydig.  I agree entirely.  I dared to rip the plastic wrapping open on that catalogue and flick through  - aarrggghhh !   Sucked in and suckered in one.  I must have them

It is inspiring and I feel a protracted day dreaming session coming on

Yes! All of them - I need everything in the catalogue ::) Someone once told me gardening isn't addictive - Ha! they were joking right?

Perhaps we need to start some sub groups to the seedaholic club.  Dahlia desperados?  Lilly lunies?

It could be worse.  Compared to a season ticket for the football or a golf club membership, I think we are pretty frugal in our hobby spending really ... go on and justify it NS  :nowink:

Don’t like to mention it Newshoot but have you forgotten your new shed? I only mention it because I had one too lol, plus I’m still considering a poly tunnel lol

The shed doubles as general storage at home, so only half the bill can be pinned on me

Oh dear! The Sarah Raven catalogue has made me weak at the knees.....and of course the 20% off will help a bit. Even Mr Sunny said the dahlias looked gorgeous.

I'll hold out for a day or two just to give me time to think where they can actually be planted, as we do have a few ...quite a few.... already

Interested to see that Sarah Raven recommends leaving tubers in the ground, covered by a deep mulch. It's what I've been doing for years, but I was thinking that I was lucky to get away with it (mostly)....

I had decided last autumn that I wouldn't be getting any new dahlias this year  -   it was so much work to keep up with the literally thousands of blooms right through until the late first frost. But my favourite supplier's catalogue arrived (Halls of Heddon) and I ended up ordering another 8 or 10. After all, the harsher winter so far may be leading to losses! Now the Sarah Raven catalogue has arrived, and I fear I may be tempted to a few more   -   though she is a bit more expensive than Halls.

I think the skill of the SR catalogue is putting the dahlias in groups where the colours go well together, with a a florist's eye, if you like.
The Halls list has some lovely flowers but for me, it's hard to carry colour/shape in your head from one page to the next to make any choices

Thanks, New Shoot - I'll take that as permission to justify the "click".  I've just spent the last twenty minutes trying to convince myself that I don't really want them - but I DO.

Aha! That's just the encouragement I needed. Trouble is, it is not only dahlias that have caught my eye.  Euphorbia Diamond Frost is a real favourite of ours and I was going to attempt cuttings, but the chance to buy five more is too good to miss, and with 20% off, almost rude not to, plus then there are the salvias to underplant the roses... you know how these things go

Well - I've spent most of the afternoon looking at dahlias and have ordered some - but from
https://www.peternyssen.com/our-shop/spring-planting/dahlias.html

Individual tubers of Otto's Thrill, Thomas Eddison, Teesbrook Audry and Gallery Art Nouveau - to make a pinky/lilac mix and Cornel Brons which should work with the café au lait dahlias I bought last year.

Plus a Belle de Barmera will I hope works with both the pinks and the peaches - but it's pretty anyway

£17.45 including the postage for 6 tubers :)

Oh, dear!   It was really difficult, but I managed to stop myself from ordering everything I liked.  If I had done I would have needed a bigger allotment and a dozen more vases for the house.
I can't wait until they're all in bloom, and looking fantastic.  When you consider what a simple bunch of flowers costs they are very good value, and they make the house look so nice, don't they?
I also love having enough flowers to be able to give bunches to other people because it seems to give them so much pleasure, particularly when it's someone you don't know. I've often approached someone who maybe looked sad or lonely when I've walked back through the local park and asked them to be kind enough to take some flowers off my hands because I don't have enough vases at home, and it's great to think you've put a smile on someone's face, and maybe brightened their day a little.

I'm a fan of them as well.  Great value for bulbs and tubers of all kinds  :D

Trouble is , that like Sunny, I am also led astray by the other attractions on offer.  I bought some flower seeds last year as she had some unusual stuff.  The little long stemmed pink was lovely.  Sarah likes the long stems for cutting.  I liked the way they wove through other plants.  I also grew some harebell blue aquilegias.  They went out as young plants last autumn and now I am anxiously waiting to see if they come through and flower.

Euphorbia Diamond Frost is a real favourite of ours

Now that is a real little gem  :D  I used to get that in when I was working at the garden centre and it always caused a stir.  Does it overwinter then?

Yes, if it is somewhere frost free, like our greenhouse, and kept slightly on the dry side  :D

Couldn’t agree more, on the odd occasion when I’ve had tickets for a show or something & then been unable to go, I’ve offered them to friends/family etc & they’ve been so thrilled when I wouldn’t accept payment, all I ask is that they pass it on if they get the chance. It came back to me when I was given 2 tickets to Chelsea flower show a few years back that someone on here had won, such a treat.

We planted our first dahlias last year after seeing the display they had at Anglesey Abbey.  But I negelected to get a really nice red...my excuse is to buy Sam Hopkins as a Valentines Present for my guy   Not for me, no.

( Oriental lilies are my fav cut flower but just do not grow in my garden  :( )

You should get an insert in the catalogue offering you 20% off your first order.  If not, you can get discount by signing up for email updates on the website.  I am probably not helping here am I

I went for a single dahlia in the end - Penhill Watermelon, but also ordered a few young plants and 2 packets of  flower seeds

I know we established that the answer to the original question was no, but a catalogue arrived (not from Sarah this time) and these caught my eye.  3 mega bulbs for a £5.  Seems rude not to

https://www.jparkers.co.uk/3-lilium-claude-shride-1013026c

There are also various oriental ones at £2.99 for 5 - product codes L020, L021 & L022.

You get 40 gladioli bulbs free with any order.  Postage is a flat rate £3.99.

I love lilies, and used to have quite a lot in the garden until the invasion of the dreaded lily beetle. Despite my best efforts, every one of my lilies is no more.

I potted up all my overwintered tubers at the end of March, and all started into growth quite quickly in the greenhouse - except for  Café au Lait Royale and Belle of Barmera. By the middle of last week they still didn't have any growth, even had a rake around in the compost to make sure. So I ordered some replacements as rooted cuttings..... you all know what I'm going to say now, don't you  ::)

Yes, that's right, when I looked this morning small shoots were showing in both pots pffff!  :nowink:

Exactly the same happened here :( Although we tried with night-time wandering paint-brush and pot in hand for days on end we eventually gave up and abandoned them. Sad for the rather pretty beetle too as it ate itself literally out of house and home.. Daft creature.

I wasn't going to admit it but I'm afraid we tried that too.... but it failed after two years of squirting and trying to remove them manually. We had loads of lilies dotted around the garden - shame as they made quite a show but... move on and try something else.

Maybe, at some time in the future, we will try again but not just yet.

Well so far this year I’ve only picked off 1 Lilly beetle but since I’m now away for a week I’m sure they’ll have all moved in to nibble & lay eggs that will be hatched & eating lime there’s no tomorrow 😱
