Bolting Brussels
« on: May 07, 2013, 18:58 »
Our sprouts have gone all leggy and are flowering.  They've been in the ground for a couple of weeks. Is there anything we can do to save them or should we start again?

Bolting already?

I thought it had to be really hot and dry for plants to bolt?
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

Yeah, but surely not enough for a plant to go in to self destruct mode

When were they sown and under what conditions were they kept before planting out?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I bought a strip of 12 in early March for £1 in the reduced corner of a garden centre.  They looked healthy but small.  Potted them on and left outside in a sheltered corner and they were growing fine while I went away on holiday for a fortnight.  Should have planted them in the ground when I got back but ran out of time and they were left out for a week too long in the mid April warmth.  They put on about 6" in 6 days!  I then planted them quite deeply in the ground and hoped for the best but 'twas not to be and they're now a foot tall and flowering.
Will pull them out and replace with some nice new healthier plants.  Another excuse to visit a garden retail emporium!  Every cloud has a silver lining!
