Has anyone tried growing Camellia x Williamsii Donation or Brigadoon? I am trying to choose between them but I can’t decide! Camellia’s grow well in my area so I know my soil type is OK. I understand that the Williamsii varieties are better than the Japonicas as they drop their petals.

I love all camellias japonica and williamsii. I had a Donation at my old house which was sort of espaliered against the garden wall (they are normally bushy but we only had a small courtyard hence the wall-training). It was absolutely stunning - masses of flowers - and I miss it. I was thinking of finding a spot for one in my new garden...but I have already put 3 japonicas in... In my view, you won't go wrong with whichever one you choose and the Brigadoon looks gorgeous too.

Thank you, Flowertot. Do they flower for the same length of time and can they be planted all year round? Should you add erinaeous compost to the planting hole?

Yes my williamsii flowered for about the same length of time as the japonicas - it usually started a little earlier. You will buy it in a pot so yes you can plant it out at any time of year and even though I have fairly acidic soil (which perhaps you do too) I add ericaceous compost to the planting hole and I feed them every now and again with camellia/rhododendron granules. Enjoy!
