pests on sweet pea flowers - id and treatment
« on: July 10, 2009, 14:56 »
I have lots of lovely sweet peas (bought the little plants - my first time growing) and was delighted until I started cutting when I find that the flowers are infested with very small black flies/beetles.

They don't seem to be doing any real harm except that when I get them indoors they just keep emerging.  They are living inside the closed lower part of teh pea flower - I can see them through the 'petal'
Can you tell what these might be and should I (can I ) do anything about them?

They are on a few other flowers but only those close to teh sweet peas so I think they are the source.
trying to be green except when blue

Just to clarify - it's not aphids, there are  just a very few greenfly on the stems.  These black things crawl and fly fast

Pollen beetles http://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profiles0802/pollen_beetle.asp

Leave them be, they are not doing any harm.

Cheers,

Gillie

I've given up on sweet peas from the lottie.  The link says leave them a few hours in a garage or somewhere with a window and they'll come out - yes they do but they just keep on coming until the flowers die.  The little pollen beetles have over-run me.  I'm cleaning the windows every few hours for days.

The lottie is next to a rape field so I expect they'll be always with me.  Sweet peas and antirhinums are now banned from the 'cutting garden' and I'm so dissapointed as they were my best flowers.
